DEINOTHERIUM

The name Deinotherium means 'terrible-beast', as it was widely believed these animals had an aggressive nature. The principle difference to modern elephants, apart from the shortened trunk, was the downward pointing tusks attached to the bottom jaw. Some types of Deinotherium grew up to four metres tall and are belived to have weighed up to twelve tonnes.
